Donlan Piedmont, Peanut Soup and Spoonbread: An Informal History of the Hotel Roanoke (Virginia Tech Real Estate Foundation, 1st ed. 1st printing, 1994). ISBN 0-9617635-1-5; 126 pp. Softcover, 8.5” x 11”. Autographed by the author on the front endpaper; a penciled notation opposite the cover page reads, “Christmas 1994.”

Build in 1882 as a company hotel by Norfolk Southern Railway, The Roanoke took a storied place i the region’s social history for a hundred years. After the railway donated the property to Virginia Tech in 1989, the community rallied to restore it as part of a convention center complex. Donlan Piedmont’s history reflects his long, affectionate history with the hotel; the book was a post-retirement project after a long career as the railroad’s public relations director.

Handsomely designed, well-written, and liberally illustrated, the book is a remarkable tribute to a place and its people. Very good condition: $25 obo.
