There are no late fees.

“Death is the only monopoly,” Joshua Cohen told us in his novel “Book of Numbers.” In “Literchoor Is My Beat,” a biography of the New Directions publisher James Laughlin, we learned that Mr. Laughlin said about approaching the end: “I fear death because I can’t recall that Dante mentions any book in hell.” Here Mr. Laughlin has given us the very definition of hell.
